Când nemurirea e un blestem, răzbunarea durează o veșnicie.

            În urmă cu peste opt sute de ani, Regina Vrăjitoarelor a pus gând rău omenirii, răspândind ciuma pe pământ. Însă Kaulder (Vin Diesel), profund mâhnit de moartea familiei sale, decide să o omoare.      Gestul său nu rămâne fără urmări, pentru că vrăjitoarea, cu limbă de moarte, îi dăruiește (tip blestem) viață veșnică.

            Fast forward în zilele noastre, îl regăsim pe Kaulder complet modernizat, cu același job de vânător de vrăjitoare, pe care acum preferă să le întemnițeze dacă își folosesc puterile asupra oamenilor. Dar este singur, unicul lui prieten fiind cel de-al 36-lea Dolan al său (Michael Caine), un fel de Alfred al lui Bruce Wayne.

            Însă, pentru că nimeni (în afară de Kaulder) nu trăiește veșnic, Dolan 36, simțindu-se la capătul puterilor, se pregătește să-i predea ștafeta lui Dolan 37 (Elijah Wood). Și asta nu este singura complicație care apare în viața lui veșnică: o magie neagră, veche de opt sute de ani, își face apariția, iar Kaulder primește avertismente ciudate și este nevoit să apeleze la ajutorul unei tinere vrăjitoare (Rose Leslie) pentru a-și aminti un secret teribil din trecutul lui.

            Filmul va fi cu siguranță pe placul fanilor lui Vin Diesel, iar eu chiar am avut ocazia să-mi îmbunătățesc părerea despre Rose Leslie, pe care n-am agreat-o prea mult in Game of Thrones. Bineînțeles, Michael Caine înnobilează toate scenele în care apare cu o interpretare impecabilă și cu alura sa de vechi înțelept, pe care eu am apreciat-o întotdeauna la actorii din generația lui.

            Mi-aș fi dorit să aflu mai multe despre vrăjitoare în general, despre harurile lor și despre cum au trăit de-a lungul secolelor. De asemenea, și povestea Dolan-ilor ar fi putut fi aprofundată.

            Efectele și replicile personajelor n-au fost tocmai originale însă, în ansamblu, filmul te mulțumește dacă nu ai așteptări prea mari. Eu una m-am distrat și cred că merită vizionat împreună cu câțiva prieteni amuzanți.

Little blue sparks of electricity gathered at my fingertips. That should have scared me, or at least aroused my curiosity. But the scene playing out before me pushed away all other emotions except anger. Intense, red-hot anger.

I recognized the three boys from school―future serial killers, to be sure. The trio had Sadie tied to a tree. Her usually silky black coat was covered in dirt and pine needles.

One of the boys―Justin was his name; we had History together―looked up at me. “Hey, look. It’s the preacher’s daughter. Maybe we can try it on her next.” He hocked a loogy and spit at my whimpering dog.

I could smell the singe of her fur. A fresh flurry of electric anger pushed its way out through my fingertips. My hair flew about my head, gathering more of the little blue bolts.

Then, I lost it. Completely lost it. I pointed at the boy with the lighter and let loose all of my anger and fear.

“Get Away!” I screamed, and with those two simple words, that fear and anger formed into something tangible and strong. An unseen force rammed into that sadistic boy with the power of an NFL linebacker. He flew into the tree directly behind him. The breath was knocked clean out of him. His brave, dog-torturing friends looked at him, then at me, then they high-tailed it out of there, leaving their fallen friend in a moaning, gasping heap on the forest floor.

Holli Anderson has a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing--which has nothing to do with writing, except maybe by adding some pretty descriptive injury and vomit scenes to her books. She discovered her joy of writing during a very trying period in her life when escaping into make-believe saved her. She enjoys reading any book she gets her hands on, but has a particular love for anything fantasy.

My thoughts:

Being a secret agent it’s a hard job no matter how talented and dedicated you are. There’s always a huge secret involved and you always have to rely on others to accomplish the tasks. But what happens when you can no longer trust those who are supposed to cover your back? What happens when there are secrets that you can‘t share with them or secrets you can’t find out? Secrets that endanger your life and that have already taken a loved one from your side.

That’s where Genie M stands. She has only two possibilities: either she’s been manipulated by her father, or her boss – or she’s been lied and betrayed by her boss, Kyle,  who’s also her ex-boyfriend.

Caught between feelings and her duty, Genie starts a maddening journey in search of the truth, and a way to save her family. And that’s extremely difficult when you don’t know where the danger lies.

The unknown changes at every step, danger lurks, and Genie must face it all, because everything depends on her. And, as if this situation wasn’t hard enough, add in the fact that Genie must resist the attraction and love (which she’s not sure she feels anymore) for her former partner who joins her in this whirlwind of action.

Secret projects, accidents, questioning escapes, miraculous savings, guns, knives, explosions and unexpected distractions, all contribute to the plot of this action packed novel. Any slower paced moment is spiced with the smoldering attraction and sexuality that lurks between Genie and Kyle so that you don’t have time to breathe.

Anything in this game can change. However small the truth, it can transform the whole scenario, and all because of some secrets which must protect and hide someone - or something. These secrets could easily cause the death of those who are too close of finding them out, and destroy any chance for a happy future with the loved one.

Genie and Kyle are the perfect characters for an action novel. They are beautiful, sexy, intelligent and loyal to each other (more or less). They totally put to the test the reader’s imagination.

Finally, Deadly Secrets, Loving Lies is full of action and on-the-edge situations, of feelings, endless secrets and lies. Fasten your seatbelts, join the special services and enjoy this wonderful book.

Necunoscutele se schimbă la tot pasul, primejdiile pândesc, iar Genie trebuie să facă față pentru că de ea poate depinde totul. Dacă stresul ăsta nu-i de ajuns, adăugați faptul că Genie trebuie să reziste tentației şi dragostei (pe care – nu e sigură – că o – mai - simte) față de fostul ei partener care i se alătură în acest vârtej al serviciilor speciale.

Proiecte secrete, accidente, evadări ce pun întrebări, salvări miraculoase (sau nu), pistoale, cuțite, explozii şi distracții amețitoare contribuie la o acțiune a cărui ritm alert nu cunoaşte pauză. Orice moment mai lent e condimentat cu atracția şi sexualitatea ce mocneşte între Genie şi Kyle astfel încât cititorul nu are timp să-şi tragă sufletul, iar personajele se consumă emoțional.

Tabere se formează, poziții şi interese se schimbă. Orice se poate modifica, un adevăr oricât de mic schimbă întregul eşafodaj construit cu grijă.

Şi toate acestea din cauza unor secrete care trebuie să protejeze pe ceva sau cineva sau să ascundă ceva sau pe cineva. Secrete ce atrag minciuni şi pot provoca moartea celor care se aproprie prea mult, precum şi distrugerea oricărei şanse pentru un viitor fericit cu persoana iubită.

Genie şi Kyle sunt personajele perfecte pentru un roman de acțiune. Frumoşi, sexy, inteligenți, loiali (mai mult sau mai puțin) unul altuia şi legămintelor făcute de fiecare, atrag şi încing imaginația cititorului.

În final, Deadly Secrets, Loving Lies este un carusel al acțiunii pe muchie de cuțit, al sentimentelor, al secretelor şi minciunilor care par fără sfârşit. Puneți-vă centurile, alăturați-vă serviciilor speciale şi bucurați-vă de o carte reuşită.
