On the morning before her 67th death, it is business as usual for Jesse Sullivan: meet with the mortician, counsel soon-to-be-dead clients, and have coffee while reading the latest regeneration theory. Jesse dies for a living, literally. As a Necronite, she is one of the population’s rare 2% who can serve as a death replacement agent, dying so others don’t have to. Although each death is different, the result is the same: a life is saved, and Jesse resurrects days later with sore muscles, new scars, and another hole in her memory.
But when Jesse is murdered and becomes the sole suspect in a federal investigation, more than her freedom and sanity are at stake. She must catch the killer herself—or die trying.
THOUGHTS
Wow! I loved it! The synopsis doesn’t do it justice.
Jesse’s job is to die for other people. The psychic predicts the time of death and the client pays her to replace him. Those like her are very rare, they are called Necronites and not everybody is happy about their existence. The government wants them under their control again and the Church wants them dead. Like permanently dead.
What starts out like a normal job turns into a giant mess and Jesse is almost killed for real. But that is just the beginning of her problems.
Her handler can’t be reached and she’s suspected of murder, among other things. She has no one to lean on except her best friend and assistant, Ally and her “kind of” boyfriend, Lane. But as the mystery thickens, they’ll realize they’re badly outnumbered and ill prepared for what is going on.
Necronites are dying everywhere and someone is trying really hard to get Jesse out of the picture as well. She’ll be forced to make some important decisions, try to find the answers and, while doing so, keep herself and the ones she cares about alive.
I really liked Jesse’s character. She’s funny and smart but her sarcasm gets her in trouble more often than not.
The supporting characters are well defined and everyone has a specific role in making the story run smoothly. There are no useless details, which is a big bonus, and I didn't feel like the story was stuck, not even a single time. There is enough mystery to make you want to know more but not so much as to be hard to understand.
The plot was brilliantly created and I was so captivated, that I was unable to put it down. And now I have to wait more than three months until the next book is available.
So. Not. Fair!
It’s hard to believe that this is Kory’s first novel. I guess she’s one of those writers who gets it right from the beginning. She has amazing potential and I’m sure she’ll give us a lot of great books in the future.
You have to add this book to your TBR list. I promise, it’s totally worth it.
Happy Reading!
