Carter Emerson's whole world has come crashing down around him. He woke to the news his best friend, Claire has gone missing without a trace, and there’s nothing he can do about it. So tonight, when my boyfriend checked his cell phone and then abruptly rushed me out of the coffee shop where we were having our date, rather than drive home like the good little girl I’m supposed to be, I pulled into an alley a few blocks away and waited to see where he was headed. You see, I have been engaging in what I guess you could call a clandestine relationship with Liam Cavanaugh for the last eight months. I met him outside of my favorite ice cream stand. He was leaning against his car, devouring a hot fudge sundae when I stepped up to place my order. Before the overly perky girl on the other side of the window even had the chance to hand me my large orange and vanilla twist cone, he was beside me paying for my treat. He was obviously older, early twenties I guessed, and stood there with his sparkling green eyes and devilish smile as he wrote his phone number down on a paper napkin and slipped it into my hand. Confidence oozed from his pores and I could tell there wasn’t a doubt in his mind that I would wind up calling him. The only words he spoke were, “Call me sometime, sweetness.” I was torn between wanting to defy him just for the sake of his conceit and being undeniably intrigued by it.

I ended up waiting three days before giving in to my curiosity about him and calling the number on the napkin. We met up the next night for coffee and the rest, as they say, is history.
