Astfel toată lumea ajunge să aibă un chip încântător, care corespunde unui ideal de frumuseţe. Cei care fac parte din grupul „Noilor Frumuseţi” sunt liberi să-şi petreacă timpul distrându-se, pe când  tinerii, „Urâţii”, se uită cu invidie la cei mai mari decât ei şi, înainte ca la rândul lor să treacă prin această transformare, pun la cale intrigi împotriva celor dintâi. Tally Youngblood este una dintre cele mai îndrăzneţe tipe din grupul „Celor Urâţi”, iar intrigile puse la cale de ea o aduc în conflict cu ameninţătorul departament de Circumstanţe Speciale. Şi-a dorit din toată inima să fie frumoasă, dar de când cea mai bună prietenă a ei, Shay, s-a refugiat în aşezarea de rebeli numită „Fum”, întemeiată de recalcitranţii „Urâţi”, Tally este derutată. Autorităţile o pun în faţa unei alegeri imposibile: fie va merge pe firul indicaţiilor secrete pe care i le dă Shay, pentru a ajunge în „Fum”, cu scopul de a-i trăda pe rebeli, fie nu i se va mai permite niciodată să aibă un chip frumos. Sperând că o va salva pe Shay, Tally porneşte într-o călătorie periculoasă.
