REVIEW: Beg For Mercy by Jami Alden

Goodreads Summary: He lurks in the shadows, waiting and watching . . . And once he has you, all you can do is. . .
BEG FOR MERCY
Megan Flynn thought she was falling in love. Cole Williams wasn't just handsome and passionate, he was one of the good guys. Or so she thought, until he arrested her brother-the only family she has left-for a murder she knows he couldn't have possibly committed. Now, with her heart broken and her brother's life hanging in the balance, Megan will risk everything to prove his innocence. Even if that means throwing herself into the path of a sadistic killer with a hauntingly familiar MO.
Seattle Detective Cole Williams had given up on making Megan see reason where her brother is concerned. But when she insinuates herself into the most shockingly brutal case Cole has ever worked, he can't stand idly by. Plunged into a secret world where the city's elite indulge their darkest desires, Cole will do whatever it takes to bring down a madman who has made Megan his most coveted prey.

What I Thaught : This is totally a great read, much more intense than what I was expecting, full of suspense and romantic scenes that will make you want more.
Megan Flynn is nice to get to know…a sarcastic, fun to be around person, who’s determined to break the emotional shield detective Cole Williams keeps around him.  She’s sure that he’s one of the good guys and that she’s falling in love.
All her world falls apart when her brother Sean is accused of brutally murdering a young woman and the one who handcuffs him is none other than Cole himself. Heartbroken, torn apart by the death sentence Sean received, her only mission now is to prove his innocence, because she knows with all her heart that he didn’t do it. It was sad to see how much her brother’ s conviction changed her, to read the details of their weekly meetings, it almost broke my heart as well.” Get your act together, Megan! Sean needs you to be strong. Sean needs to see you’re okay. Now put on a fucking happy face like you do every Saturday.” She’s amazingly strong, iron willed and stubborn, not caring at all that everyone thinks she’s “The crazy, delusional sister who won’t believe her brother is guilty.”

For Cole Williams, being a cop wasn’t just a job, it was his life. Haunted by his past, he realized long ago that he was more committed to his job than he could ever be to a woman, so he tries to keep Megan away as much as he can. But today, three years after arresting Sean, guilt’s eating at him because he let her down. No matter how much he tells himself that he’d done the right thing, the way he’d treated Megan after that is still unsettling him. “He always seemed so strong, so in control. But she, more than most, knew the deep currents that ran beneath the surface, the emotions Cole had to keep in check just to get through the day. But every once in a while, even he cracked.”

When I began reading the book, I was sure Cole won’t be one of my favorite characters, but I totally underestimated him and I’m glad! He’s so the one to fall in love with…

Sean Flynn done ten years in the military, came home as a hero, and he’s now sentenced to death for rape and murder even he doesn’t really know if he committed or not. His sister describes him as “fiercely protective and would never deliberately hurt a weaker person.”

The other characters are very interesting as well, they have their own touching, very realistic stories (I almost cried reading the villain’s story, imagine that!). There were moments when I wanted to shake them for not doing the right thing, or for hiding their feelings and I feared for their lives every moment.

This book kept me up all night, I couldn’t put my Kindle down…lol. The crime scenes are so scary, you might want to read it in daytime so you can sleep at night, but that’s a good mystery – thriller for, isn’t it? I can’t wait to read the sequel because I want more of Sean, who, in my opinion, still has a lot to share.
