Review: Gabriel's Inferno by Sylvain Reynard

My thoughts: I don’t know what you’re going to think about me after I tell you this, but it’s true, and it’s all me, therefore I’m not ashamed: I have always hated school books and forced reading, so I did everything I could to get away from it. “The Divine Comedy” was a mandatory read for my junior year of high school, so of course I didn’t read it. The same happened to “Pride and Prejudice”, “Jane Eyre”, “Wuthering Heights” and many other classics. I’ve eventually read some of them a few years ago, just because I finally wanted to.

“Gabriel’s Inferno” made me WANT to find and read Dante’s work as soon as possible. All the quotes, the poetry, the artful style Sylvain Reynard used to write the story, left me aching to know more about the basic tale. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even have to search that much: it stared back at me from the middle of my living room bookcase. Front row.

“I was thinking about how I waited for you. I waited and waited, and you never came.” He smiled at her sadly.

“I’m sorry, Gabriel.”

“You’re here now. Apparuit iam beatitudo vestra.”

“I don’t know what that means.” She sounded shy.

“It means now your blessedness appears. But really, it should be now my blessedness appears. Now that you’re here.”

I can’t think of this novel as a story about forbidden love, well…it is, but I left this aspect somewhere in the back of my mind. Julia and Gabriel are both adults, and get to know each other in the most fascinating way. But it’s not at all a story about sex. You won’t find any explicit sexual content in its pages, just an artful, amazing and unique love story, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes very sweet, but all so subtle and intelligently written. Every touch, every word and every look the characters give each other has a deeper meaning. You’ll definitely fall in love with the author’s style!

"Have you ever fallen asleep in the arms of a boy before, Beatrice?"

She shook her head.

"Then I'm glad I'm your first."

“Look at me. Look into my eyes." His eyes fixed on hers as they fluttered open. 

"I'll give you anything. My body, my soul, Take them. Take everything.”

"You are hot like the sun but far more lovely."

The mystery of their pasts is also a big part of the story that will keep you turning pages and enjoying every minute of it. Both Gabriel and Julia have their light and dark sides, and you can see it even if they don’t. Get ready to be left breathless while discovering the reasons they act the way they do.

“Why not think that sometimes—just sometimes—you can overcome evil with silence? And let people hear their hatefulness in their own ears, without distraction. Maybe goodness is enough to expose evil for what it really is, sometimes.”

"Well, you scratched me deeply today, my kitten. You drew blood with every word. Are you happy now?"

"You begged me to come after you - to look for you in Hell. That's exactly where I found you. And you can stay there forever, for all I care."

The supporting characters, especially Rachel, Gabriel’s sister and Grace, his mother, have an important part in the story as well. Grace isn’t there, but you can always feel her presence. Her kindness and love for her children guide them through life even after she’s left. 

Rachel can see through Gabriel’s darkness when no one else can. She loves him and always hopes for him, not letting herself be intimidated by his Professor vibe.

Rachel narrowed her eyes. “He’s Gabriel, Julia. What’s wrong with you two?”

“She’s my student. There are rules.” Gabriel’s tone began to grow increasingly cool and unfriendly.

“She’s my friend, Gabriel. And I say screw the rules!” 

“Gabriel, get Julia a drink, would you? And stop boring her with your antique crap!”

This is one of the few slow paced books I truly loved. In fact I wished it could’ve been even slower, because I didn’t want to finish it. Sylvain’s ability to describe feelings, touches, emotions and last but not least places, turns this book into a real work of art.

"When I am an old man and I can remember nothing else, I will remember this moment. The first time my eyes beheld an angel in the flesh." […]I will remember your scent and your touch and how it felt to love you. But most of all, I will remember how it felt to gaze at true beauty, both inside and out. For you are fair, my beloved, in soul and in body, generous of spirit and generous of heart. And I will never see anything this side of heaven more beautiful than you."

Părerea mea: Nu știu ce părere vă veți face despre mine după ce am să vă spun asta, dar e adevărat, și e ceva ce mă definește, așa că nu mă simt deloc rușinată: am urât întotdeauna lecturile școlare obligatorii, ca de altfel orice lectură forțată, așa că am făcut tot ce-am putut pentru a scăpa de ele. Mi s-a cerut sa citesc „Divina Comedie” în primul an de liceu, așa că, desigur, n-am facut-o. Același lucru s-a întâmplat și cu „Mândrie și prejudecată”, „Jane Eyre”, „La răscruce de vânturi” și multe alte cărți clasice. Pe unele le-am citit, în cele din urmă, acum câțiva ani, doar pentru că într-un final am avut chef.

„Gabriel’s Inferno” m-a făcut să VREAU să găsesc și să citesc opera lui Dante cât mai curând posibil. Toate citatele, poezia, stilul nemaipomenit pe care Sylvain Reynard l-a folosit pentru a scrie acest roman, m-au lăsat cu dorința de a afla cât mai multe despre povestea originala, din care s-a inspirat. Ca fapt divers, nici măcar nu a trebuit să caut prea mult: volumele ma asteptau cuminti pe raftul din mijloc al bibliotecii din sufragerie. Rândul din față.

"Mă gândeam la cât de mult te-am așteptat. Am așteptat și am tot așteptat, dar niciodată n-ai venit." El îi zâmbi trist.

"Îmi pare rău, Gabriel."

"Dar ești aici, acum. Apparuit iam beatitudo vestra. "

"Nu știu ce înseamnă asta." Spuse ea timid.

"Înseamnă acum apare binecuvântarea ta. Dar, de fapt, ar trebui să fie acum apare binecuvântarea mea. Acum că tu ești aici."

Nu pot considera acest roman ca fiind o poveste despre o iubire interzisă, de fapt ... intr-un fel este, dar am lăsat acest aspect undeva în planul secund. Julia și Gabriel sunt amândoi adulți și se descoperă unul pe celălalt în cel mai fascinant mod, însă nu este deloc o poveste despre sex. Nu veți găsi nicăieri în paginile sale continut sexual explicit, ci doar o frumoasă poveste de dragoste, unică și uimitoare, uneori sfâșietoare, alteori încântătoare, dar deosebit de subtil și inteligent scrisă. Fiecare atingere, fiecare cuvânt și fiecare privire pe care și-o împărtășesc personajele are o semnificație profundă. Cu siguranță vă veți îndrăgosti de stilul autorului!

"Ai mai adormit vreodata in bratele unui băiat, Beatrice?"

Ea clătină din cap.

"Atunci mă bucur că sunt primul."

"Uită-te la mine. Uită-te în ochii mei." El o fixă cu privirea imediat ce ea își deschise ochii.

"Îți dau orice. Trupul meu, sufletul meu, ia-le.. Ia totul."

"Ești fierbinte ca soarele, dar mult mai frumoasă.

Misterul trecutului lor are, de asemenea, un rol foarte important și vă va ține cu sufletul la gură de la început până la sfârșit. Atât Gabriel cât și Julia au si laturi luminoase și întunecate, iar voi le veți putea observa, chiar dacă ei nu reușesc. Pregătiți-vă de momente șocante pe măsură ce veți descoperi motivele pentru care acționează în modul în care o fac.

"De ce să nu ne gândim că, uneori, doar uneori, putem învinge răul cu tăcerea? Si să lăsăm oamenii să-și audă urâciunea în propriile urechi, fără a le distrage atenția. Poate că bunătatea este suficientă pentru a expune răul așa cum este cu adevărat, uneori."

"Ei bine, m-ai rănit profund azi, pisicuța mea. Ai făcut să curgă sânge cu fiecare cuvânt. Ești fericita acum?"

"M-ai rugat să vin după tine - să te caut în Iad. Exact acolo te-am găsit și poți rămâne acolo pentru totdeauna, din partea mea..."

Personajele secundare, în special Rachel, sora lui Gabriel și Grace, mama sa, au și ele un rol foarte important în roman. Grace nu mai este acolo, dar i se poate simți mereu prezența. Bunătatea și dragostea pe care o poartă pentru copiii ei, îi ghidează prin viață, chiar și după ce ea s-a stins.

Rachel este singura care poate vedea prin întunericul lui Gabriel, atunci când nimeni altcineva nu reușește. Ea îl iubește, speră mereu pentru el și nu se lăsa intimidată de alura lui de Profesor.

Rachel se încruntă. "E Gabriel, Julia. Ce e în neregulă cu voi doi? "

"Ea e studenta mea. Există reguli "tonul lui Gabriel deveni din ce în ce rece și neprietenos.

"Ea e prietena mea, Gabriel. Iar eu spun la naiba cu regulile! "

"Gabriel, oferă-i Juliei ceva de băut, vrei? Și n-o mai plictisi cu prostiile tale antice! "

„Gabriel’s Inferno” este una dintre puținele cărți cu ritm lent pe care le iubesc cu adevărat. De fapt, mi-aș fi dorit să fie chiar mai lentă, pentru că nu am vrut să ajung la final. Abilitatea lui Sylvain de a descrie sentimentele, emoțiile, atingerile și, nu în ultimul rând, locurile, transformă această carte într-o adevărată operă de artă.

"Când am să fiu bătrân și n-am să-mi mai amintesc nimic altceva, am să-mi amintesc acest moment. Prima dată când ochii mei au văzut un înger întrupat.". [...] Am să-mi amintesc parfumul și atingerea ta și cum m-am simțit iubindu-te. Dar mai presus de toate, am să-mi amintesc ce am simțit privind adevărata frumusețe, atât interioară cât și exterioară. Pentru că ești frumoasă, iubita mea, la suflet și la trup, ai un suflet mare și o inimă mare. Și nu voi mai vedea niciodată, de această parte a Raiului, ceva mai frumos ca tine.

Lectură plăcută!

P.S: Mulți dintre voi și-au dat probabil seama deja, din diversele discuții purtate pe rețelele de socializare că aceasta carte este noul nostru CRUSH, așa că intenționăm să o facem cunoscută și în România pentru că merită citită.

I open my mouth to say something comforting, but I’m unsure of what. In this moment, I’m reminded that I know little about him. Other than the sarcasm and desire to understand nothing of my queendom, he hasn’t allowed me past the surface. But then, I have my own walls, hiding things I’d never want him or any other to know. And I understand that need to hide them. You can’t trust anyone. “Caben…” I start, but still can’t find the right words. He lowers his hand from his face, never taking his eyes off the glinting water top. “You’re right,” he finally says. “Let’s find the access to Lilly’s section.” A hollow pang hits my chest, and I’m not sure why. Something in his voice sounds lost, broken. I imagine the gears around my heart spinning faster, trying to keep up with my racing heart. When he sidesteps me, I reach out and grab his arm. “Caben, I didn’t mean—” “It’s fine, Kal,” he snaps. “We have work to do.” “No, I’ve said something to offend you.” I drop my hand, but keep close to him, not allowing him to leave my side. Goddess, trying to understand the male brain is harder than anything in protector training. I’ve heard people say that you have to tip-toe around a woman’s emotions, but a man’s ego is every bit as fragile, if not more so. He releases a heavy breath through his nose and walks back to the pool. He sits down along the edge and rolls up his pants, then slips off his boots. “I honestly don’t think Bax or his goons will be returning tonight.” He sinks his bare feet into the water and sighs. Glancing at the back of the cave, I plant my hands on my hips. We don’t have time for indulgencies, but the prince is still my charge. If it were my empress, I’d give her anything she’d ask for. Allow her as much time as she needed to collect herself. Some I dare not repeat for fear I’d leave here missing a limb, but that’s one, yes.” He takes my booted foot and begins to unlace it. “I’ve heard that the empress’s protectors are untouchable—forbidden to give themselves to men. And that they’ll snap a man’s neck just for making an advance.” My mouth drops open. Appalled, I counter, “That’s not true.” “All right,” he says, as if he hasn’t just insulted my very existence. “It’s only rumors. Things men jaw about in pubs. The unattainable woman is a fantasy, Kal. Don’t be offended.” “Unattainable?” I grit my teeth, trying to maintain my composure. “Tell me, prince. Do men in your country just go around bedding every woman they can in order to keep them compliant?” I shake my head. “If their fantasy is a woman that would have nothing to do with them, it seems to me it’s their way of feeding their egos after being rejected.” His eyes widen. “No! How does your brain come up with these—” He bites off his words, his lips thin as he presses them together. “Look, it was a joke.” I nod, many times. “Another joke. I’m glad that our hard work and sacrifice is amusing to the men of Perinya.” Caben lets out another sigh and slowly pulls off my boot. His warm fingers skim my calf as he inches up my pant leg. “Just stick your foot in,” he says, then adds lower, “while I stick mine in my mouth.” Unexpectedly, I laugh. “At least it’s now clean,” I say. “Would you like some help getting it to your face?”
